Three’s Company

I am frequently asked to paint pineapples, so this summer I set up a still life and did some sketches. I decided to settle on painting 3 of them because that is my magic number. I am one of three, I have three children and my life events seem to always come in threes. Pineapples are not only interesting to paint, but they have a long history of symbolism. They were once considered a symbol of status because they could not be grown on European soil and only the affluent could afford to import them. Because of their rarity, they were extremely expensive in Europe and were often rented only as decoration and not consumed. In America, pineapples quickly became a symbol of hospitality and friendliness because of their exotic qualities and rarity.
