My mother’s favorite bird was the pelican.  She spent many hours at the beach watching them float along or dive from mid-air into a school of fish.  Pelicans are efficient birds, using their large, flexible beaks to scoop various fish out of the water.  My mother, who was efficient as well, told me she wanted to be a pelican in another life so when I go to the beach and see them bobbing along in the water, I imagine it is my mother, content and proud to be a pelican.
